Dr Muhammad Najib Azca

Dr. Muhamad Najib Azca is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, and Vice-Dean for Research, Cooperation, Community Services and Alumni Affairs, in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, at Universitas Gadjah Mada, in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. He is in Melbourne as a Visiting Fellow in the School of Social and Political Sciences, under the faculty’s Indonesia Initiative. He completed a research MA at the ANU (2003) on communal conflict in Ambon, and then a PhD at the University of Amsterdam (2011) on the biographies of Islamic fighters who had joined in religious war in Eastern Indonesia in the post-jihad period. More recently he has been conducting and publishing research on young people, radicalization, and communal conflict (particularly in Eastern Indonesia). He is chairperson of the Indonesian Association of Graduate Programs in Sociology and the Indonesia Youth Studies Association. He also holds a position as researcher in the UGM Center for Security and Peace Studies.
