Marian Simms was born in Canberra and studied Arts/Law at The Australian National University,she subsequently changed her course to honours in History and Political Science. On graduation, she was appointed to a teaching fellowship at The University of Adelaide, before accepting a postgraduate (Master’s) scholarship in the Political Science Departnment at The University of Melbourne, then a PhD scholarship at La Trobe University’s Politics Department, and continued her association with Melbourne through a part-time lectureship.
From 1985-1993 she served as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the Political Science Department at The ANU, and was appointed to a Readership in 1994 until 2002 when she accepted appointment as Chair in Political Studies at The University of Otago. In 2009 Marian returned to Australia as Head of the School of History, Heritage and Society at Deakin University.
She has been active in national and international research networks serving as Chair of the International Political Science Association’s (IPSA) Research Committee on Gender, Globalization and Democratization.She was President of the Australasian Political Studies Association (APSA) in 1993-94, and was the Editor of its Journal (then Politics) from 1987-90. She is currently Co-Editor of its Journal (now the Australian Journal of Political Science) (2010-).
She has chaired review committees for the Swedish Research Council and served on the New Zealand Performance Based Research Funding (PBRF) Social Science’s Panel.
In 2011, Marian was appointed as Executive Director, Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences at the Australian Research Council.
