Legislation on export controls is not limited to the Customs Act and the sending of physical items to destinations outside Australia. Collaborating internationally on new know-how on topics deemed ‘controlled’ is now regulated by the Defence Trade Controls Act.

Supervision of research students, such as PhD, on controlled topics is also regulated by the Autonomous Sanctions Act.
