SPEAKER - Claudia Lagos

Dr Claudia Lagos

Dr. Claudia Lagos is an astronomer of Chilean nationality, who obtained her PhD from Durham University in November 2012. She uses large computer simulations to study how galaxies form and evolve throughout time, and how that evolution is connected to the growth of structures in our Universe. Her work has given her several international prizes and recognition, such as the 2013 Springer Thesis Prize, which recognises the best PhD theses in Physics worldwide, and the 2014 MERAC Prize for the best PhD Thesis in Theoretical Astrophysics in Europe during the years 2012 and 2013. This led her home country Chile to recognise her as one of the 100 Women leaders in Chile and one of the 100 Young leaders in 2014.

Dr Claudia Lagos is also a very active advocate of equity and diversity in astronomy, and as part of that, she participated in a discussion on improving the representation of women in industry and academia at the European Parliament in 2015. She has also organised workshops on “Women in STEM fields” and “Diversity and Equity in Astronomy” held in July during the European Week of Astronomy and Space Sciences.

Dr. Lagos joined the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research at UWA in 2015 to take part in its theoretical and computational efforts. Before joining ICRAR, Lagos worked in the European Southern Observatory in Germany.
